I would like to bring some of my colleagues and/or some of our students down to visit the campus and DRES. How can this be arranged?

Information about a campus tour is found at this link:  http://admissions.illinois.edu/visit/visit_illinois.html. It is best if you schedule the campus tour first and then contact DRES to schedule a visit with us. On our web site: www.disability.illinois.edu, each staff person who works with UI students who have a particular type of disability is listed. It is best to schedule an appointment with the staff person who works with the particular type of disability you are interested in.

What are some of the skills that have helped students with disabilities to be successful in college?

Successful students effectively use: assistive technology, organizational strategies, time management strategies, learning strategies and accommodations, test preparation and test-taking strategies. They effectively understand and describe: their learning strengths and weaknesses (including areas of disability) and their rights and responsibilities as a student with a disability. Successful students seek help when necessary, including utilizing appropriate disability services.  Successful students effectively advocate for themselves and their needs and take responsibility for their own learning.

What can high school personnel do to prepare their students for college?

Teach students about their disability and its impact on learning as well as their strengths and how they can use them effectively to help them learn. Provide many opportunities for students to practice self-advocacy.

DRES maintains an email list of contacts of those high school personnel who are interested in high school to college transition issues. Once to twice a year, information relevant to this transition, including the transition into the University of Illinois and DRES services, is sent out via email to those on this list.
